What Does the Research Show?

A 2025 review in the International Journal of Cancer looked at research on the estrobolome and breast cancer. The authors found that the link is biologically possible. However, human studies remain limited and show mixed results.
Some studies have found differences in gut bacteria between women with and without breast cancer. These findings do not tell us whether the bacteria caused the cancer. Other factors may explain the differences.

Another systematic review looked at studies on the gut microbiome, the estrobolome and breast cancer. It also found differences in gut bacteria in some studies. However, the studies varied greatly in their methods and results.
The researchers said that more high-quality studies are needed before we can draw firm conclusions.

So, what should we take from this?
The research shows an interesting connection. It does not show that an unhealthy gut causes breast cancer.

Research also links regular physical activity with a lower risk of breast cancer.
You do not need to train intensely to benefit. Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing and strength exercises can all help you stay active.
Limit alcohol
Alcohol is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer.
This link exists independently of the gut microbiome.
For this reason, limiting alcohol has stronger evidence for breast cancer risk reduction than taking a probiotic or trying to change your estrobolome.
Maintain a healthy weight
Maintaining a healthy weight can support metabolic health.
After menopause, excess body weight can increase the risk of breast cancer.
This does not mean that body weight alone determines your risk. Genetics, age, hormones and many other factors also matter.
Don’t Replace Breast Screening With Gut Health
This is one of the most important points to remember.
Supporting your gut does not replace breast screening or medical care.
Speak to a healthcare professional if you notice a new breast lump or another unusual change.
Other changes may include:
- A change in breast size or shape
- Skin changes
- Nipple inversion
- Unusual nipple discharge
- Persistent pain or swelling
- A change that does not go away

Should I worry if I have taken antibiotics?
Not because of breast cancer alone.
Antibiotics can temporarily change the gut microbiome. However, there is not enough evidence to say that an individual course of antibiotics determines someone’s future breast cancer risk.
If you need antibiotics, take them as prescribed by your healthcare professional.
Do not avoid necessary treatment because of concerns about your gut bacteria.
Gut Health and Hormonal Health
The gut does not work on its own.
Gut bacteria interact with the immune system, metabolism and hormones. Researchers are still learning how these systems affect one another.
